Well, we have had a pretty ordinary week. We completed lessons 16-19 in Math as well as investigation #2. We started ecosystems in Science and went outside to do an experiment. We are studying early American settlers in Social Studies. In Writing, we have been working on building better sentences. The Daily 5 has been going very smoothly during reading class. We love that we get to have choices of activities during our reading time. Mrs. Q has told us how proud she is of how well we are doing with our independence during the Daily 5.
Our exciting news is that we voted for student council. It was a very close race, but our representative to Longfellow Student Council for 2012-2013 are Lauren Matthies and JT Cafferty.

Closing Thoughts 9/7/2012
Due to a schedule change last Friday, we were unable to bring you our closing thoughts for last week. We hope you enjoy this week's installment.
We had our first family group meeting for this school year on Wednesday. In family groups, we played get to know you games and learned how to do the Sid Shuffle. Our class LOVES the Sid Shuffle and are thinking about some creative ideas to go with the Sid Shuffle. Stay tuned for further updates!
In PE, we completed the Pacer test. Mrs. Quinones has no idea what this test is, but according to the kids, they had to run a lot. Not to mention, they were very, very sweaty upon returning to our classroom. Unfortunately, our AC is not working properly so they found NO relief there. :(
Band started this week. It is not to late to sign up if anyone is still interested. Please contact the school for more information.
Later today, we will find out who made Ambassadors and we find out what the Circle Project is. Ask your child for more information on either of those.

Closing Thoughts 8/24/2012
Finally, it's Friday!!!!! We currently have 33 Dollar Words as a class. Meredith, Lauren, Regan, Anderson, Stephanie, and Kelsie have found their first dollar words. We began reading Night of the Spadefoot Toad this week. This novel was one of last year's Golden Sower Nominees and is a new book for 5th graders. If you'd like to know what happens in this story, ask us or be an example and pick up the book and read it. We started our math rotations this week. We have had four lessons and a pre-test.
Next week we will continue to be dismissed at 1:00 due to the heat. FYI, Mrs. Shaw's room on Thursday afternoon before we had lunch was already 2 degrees hotter inside than it was outside.TGIF!

Closing Thoughts
Phew! We made it through the first two days of school! Sigh, we had to take a test, but we got through it. It was a math baseline test to show what we know. It has been a struggle not having ANY recess because our recess is at our dismissal time. :( Mrs. Cafferty lead us in an all school assembly on Thursday. She talked to us about respect and her message was to Go for the Gold. That means to try your hardest and practice, practice, practice.
Our biggest excitement was starting our read a loud book titled Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea. This book is a brand new 5th grade teacher and his class. One of their assignments was to find "Dollar Words." Mike and Grace have both found their own Dollar Words while the rest of us are still scavenging. Bye Bye For Now!

First Day of School
Wow!!! What a great first day of school! I am so excited about this school year and what we have coming up. Today we took care of what I like to call "business" type activities. For example, we reviewed rules and expectations for several different areas. We also helped the kindergarteners get through the lunch line and learn about the cafeteria. I know the kindergarten teachers were very thankful to have our help. My favorite part of the day was launching Read to Self. I was very impressed by how much stamina we had to start out. What a great way to start the year!
